Departing from our campsite in the Tarn, Le Soleil des Bastides, you are perfectly located to visit Castelnau-de-Montmiral. The village name comes from Occitan and literally means “the mount from which one looks” (mont + mirar). The bastide therefore offers a stunning vantage point over the surrounding landscape.

THE BASTIDE

Castelnau-de-Montmiral is a village 11 minutes from Le Soleil des Bastides and 32 minutes from Albi. This bastide was founded in 1222 by Raymond VII of Toulouse. You’ll appreciate its medieval half-timbered houses and the Arcades square. In the centre stands a pillory—animals were tied here before sacrifice, and thieves were punished. Leaving the centre, you can stop at the gates of the former ramparts:

  • the Garrics Gate
  • the Toulze Gate.

The Pechmiral promontory, once used for processions, is topped by a statue of the Virgin. The view from here inspired the village’s name.

CASTELNAU-DE-MONTMIRAL, A NATURE DISCOVERY

For nature lovers, Castelnau-de-Montmiral is near the Grésigne forest. This woodland hides Bronze Age dolmens and is crossed by the GR 46 long-distance footpath.

Want an unusual forest tour? From mid‑September to mid‑October, you can go out at night to try and hear the rutting of deer.

Several cycling routes start here—including one from the forest—plus other circuits. For details, visit the tourist office.

FOR YOU

In hot weather, we recommend the Vère‑Grésigne leisure centre. Family-friendly, it has a toddlers’ area and a water slide for teens. Paid activities include mini‑golf and fishing. Access for walking or picnicking is free.

For food lovers, don’t miss the Rucher de Vors, Mme Grand’s apiary, where you can buy honey directly.

For music and dance lovers, the village hosts the “Les Musicales” festival every year from July 20 to 22.
