Departing from our campsite in the Tarn<\/a>, Le Soleil des Bastides, you are perfectly located to visit Castelnau-de-Montmiral. The village name comes from Occitan and literally means \u201cthe mount from which one looks\u201d (mont + mirar). The bastide therefore offers a stunning vantage point over the surrounding landscape.<\/p>\n

Castelnau-de-Montmiral<\/strong> is a village 11 minutes from Le Soleil des Bastides and 32 minutes from Albi. This bastide was founded in 1222 by Raymond\u202fVII of Toulouse<\/strong>. You’ll appreciate its medieval half-timbered houses and the Arcades square<\/strong>. In the centre stands a pillory\u2014animals were tied here before sacrifice, and thieves were punished. Leaving the centre, you can stop at the gates of the former ramparts<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

    The Pechmiral promontory<\/strong>, once used for processions, is topped by a statue of the Virgin. The view from here inspired the village\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

    For nature lovers, Castelnau-de-Montmiral is near the Gr\u00e9signe forest. This woodland hides Bronze Age dolmens and is crossed by the GR\u202f46 long-distance footpath.<\/p>\n

    Want an unusual forest tour? From mid\u2011September to mid\u2011October, you can go out at night to try and hear the rutting of deer.<\/p>\n

    Several cycling routes start here\u2014including one from the forest\u2014plus other circuits. For details, visit the tourist office.<\/p>\n
