Carcassonne is a city located in the Aude department, about 2 hours from our campsite in the Tarn at Cahuzac-sur-V\u00e8re<\/a> and also 2 hours from Albi via the motorway. The city boasts two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the medieval citadel since 1997, and the Canal du Midi since 1996. Originally built in the 5th century, Carcassonne flourished in the Middle Ages, and its most iconic buildings date back to that era. What many people don\u2019t realize is how much greenery and nature the city has to offer.<\/p>\n

The medieval citadel stands on the right bank of the Aude River. Inside the walls, you\u2019ll find:<\/p>\n

  • the Comtal Castle<\/strong>, built in the 12th<\/sup> century<\/li>\n
  • the Narbonnaise Gate<\/strong>, built around 1280 on the eastern side<\/li>\n
  • and the Aude Gate<\/strong>, located to the west<\/li>\n
  • Don\u2019t miss the Cit\u00e9\u2019s open-air theatre<\/strong>, created in 1908<\/li>\n

    The Canal du Midi, created by Pierre Paul Riquet, connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. It runs through the heart of the city and features many aqueducts and locks. You can explore it on foot, by bike along marked trails, or by boat.<\/p>\n

    To cool off on hot summer days, we recommend heading to the Cavay\u00e8re Lake, just 10 minutes from the city. You can also walk or bike around the lake.<\/p>\n

    A true gem of the Occitanie region, Carcassonne makes a perfect day trip from our campsite.<\/p>\n

    • The House of Chivalry<\/strong>: learn about everyday life in the Middle Ages. Complete the experience by visiting the Living History Centre, where you can chat with a 13th-century knight<\/li>\n
    • And of course, don\u2019t miss the spectacular fireworks display on July 14th<\/strong> at 10:30 p.m. We recommend arriving early in the afternoon due to the large crowds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
